Negative Space is a video art installation that questions the relationship between loss and memory as explored through the physical and virtual body.
In this piece, the artist visually replicates a window from this site-specific location and uses it as a virtual stage to re-enact a memory of physical loss due to illness, surgery, and violence.
Occupying the space of the reflection, the virtual body can only be represented by its own loss (its lack of presence). The reflected body creates the space of an 'other' while simultaneously negating the presence of the viewers within the virtual space. This occurs because the window provides a complete reflection of the room sans voyeur -- only containing a representation of the remembered (and incomplete) body.
