Big Brother

This image of Orwell's Big Brother was created for an environmental theater production of 1984 which took place throughout the T.F.Green Building in Providence, RI. Appearing as if the face is watching from the shadows, this ink drawing was designed to be reproduced easily using a copy machine so that Big Brother's image could then be wheat-pasted throughout the theatrical space as well as the immediate area surrounding the performance venue. The copying and pasting process helped us to keep the visual design of this graphic in line with the 1940's feel of the rest of the production design - and the multiplicity of the image throughout the space created a surveillance aesthetic without the use of any high tech equipment. As a side note, inspiration for the form of the face came from an overturned rat (its tail creating the outline along the right side of the image) - one of the character's worst fears.
